[Review] I tested Google’s AI chatbot Bard. Here’s how it compares to Bing

Undoubtedly Google’s most anticipated release of 2023, Bard has arrived in a limited beta. Being available to users in the US and the UK, I was able to gain access to an early preview.

While I’ll be reviewing Google’s Bard from an SEO professionals point-of-view, I’ll also be providing details of how Bard’s generative AI performs as a user.

Bard has now been available to the public for over a week and I’ve had enough time to understand the ins and outs of their chatbot, and how it compares to Bing’s Sydney.

Much like my review of Bing’s AI Chat, I’ll try to provide a balanced review of Bard. But first, here’s how I was able to access Bard, while located in Australia.

Accessing Bard outside of the US and the UK

Like many who are eager to test out Bard, you might be like me and not located in either the US or the UK. That is fine, and something you can easily get around.

The first step is in signing up for the waitlist. An annoying part of this process is that you can’t use a Google Workspace email, so you must have an @gmail.com address.

Once you’ve submitted your details, you’ll need to wait until you receive an email from Google to say that access has been granted. If you’re located outside the US or the UK, there will then be a notice that appears like the one below.

Use a VPN to access Bard if you’re located outside of the UK or the US

To get around this, you’ll need to have a VPN installed. The simplest VPN to use is probably ExpressVPN, which you’ll need to install on your computer. Use it as a trial for the duration of your testing if you don’t want it indefinitely.

Once you’ve enabled the VPN while on the screen shown to the left above, you can refresh your browser while on bard.google.com and the AI chat appears. Keep the VPN on for either a US or UK location to continue using Bard.

Now, what does my Twitter community think of Bard? I did an early poll and here’s what users of Bard thought in the early stages.

Almost 70% of users think Bing’s chatbot beta is better

Bing must have done something right, because they’re beating Google’s AI chatbot offering in the Beta phase. That’s a big deal and quite a resounding preference for Bing.

A big part of this preference toward Sydney is in the use of citations, which I’ll get into in a moment. But more than anything, users just felt like Bard was unexciting.
